چکیده

The SuperDARN radars map high-latitude ionospheric plasma drift velocities by measuring the Doppler frequency shift of HF signals scattered by decameter electron density irregularities. In many cases the ionospheric returns are contaminated by strong scatter from the ground or sea surface. In this paper we develop and test a two-component fitting algorithm to separate ionospheric and surface scatter components. Application of the technique to sample data reveals that mixed scatter may considerably distort ionospheric convection patterns derived from the radar data and can cause underestimation of the plasma drift velocity.

An assessment of the “map-potential” and “beam-swinging” techniques for measuring the ionospheric convection pattern using data from the SuperDARN radars

The SuperDARN HF coherent scatter radars (Greenwald et al., 1995) provide line-of-sight (l-o-s) velocity measurements of ionospheric convection flow over the polar regions of the northern and southern hemispheres. A number of techniques have been developed in order to obtain 2-D plasma flow vectors from these l-o-s observations. This study entails a comparison of the ionospheric flow vectors de...

Comparison of SuperDARN radar boundaries with DMSP particle precipitation boundaries

[1] Auroral boundary algorithms for SuperDARN ionospheric convection observations are introduced. Both the equatorward boundary of scatter (EBS) and the convection reversal boundary (CRB) are found and compared with boundaries based on DMSP particle precipitation observations. These comparisons provide an intercalibration between the two schemes and insight into the relationship between dispara...

A dynamical model of high‐latitude convection derived from SuperDARN plasma drift measurements

[1] A discrete set of climatological patterns of high‐latitude ionospheric convection are derived using line‐of‐sight plasma drift data from the Super Dual Auroral Radar Network (SuperDARN). The patterns are derived independently for the Northern Hemisphere and Southern Hemisphere and for varying solar wind, interplanetary magnetic field (IMF), and dipole tilt angle conditions. By interpolating...

Single Walled Carbon Nanotube Effects on Mixed Convection heat Transfer in an Enclosure: a LBM Approach

The effects of Single Walled Carbon Nanotube (SWCNT) on mixed convection in a cavity are investigated numerically. The problem is studied for different Richardson numbers (0.1-10), volume fractions of nanotubes (0-1%), and aspect ratio of the cavity (0.5-2.5) when the Grashof number is equal to 103. The volume fraction of added nanotubes to Water as base fluid are lowers than 1% to make dilute ...

Effects of Brownian motion and Thermophoresis on MHD Mixed Convection Stagnation-point Flow of a Nanofluid Toward a Stretching Vertical Sheet in Porous Medium

This article deals with the study of the two-dimensional mixed convection magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) boundary layer of stagnation-point flow over a stretching vertical plate in porous medium filled with a nanofluid. The model used for the nanofluid incorporates the effects of Brownian motion and thermophoresis in the presence of thermal radiation. The skin-friction coefficient, Nusselt number an...
